Asthma is a long-term condition in which the airways become inflamed and sensitive, narrowing in response to triggers. The good news: with the right diagnosis and inhaler plan, most people control it well and live normally.
Symptoms
- Cough, often worse at night or early morning
- Wheezing or a whistling sound when breathing
- Shortness of breath
- Chest tightness
Common Triggers
- Allergens like dust mites, pollen and pet dander
- Respiratory infections such as colds
- Air pollution, smoke and strong smells
- Exercise and cold air
- Weather changes and thunderstorms
How We Diagnose It
Diagnosis is based on your symptoms and history, supported by spirometry, a simple breathing test that measures how well your lungs are working. Allergy testing helps identify triggers that make asthma worse.
How It's Treated
- Reliever inhalers for quick relief
- Preventer (steroid) inhalers to control inflammation
- Identifying and reducing triggers
- A written asthma action plan
- Allergen immunotherapy or biologics for selected patients
Uncontrolled asthma isn't something to live with. A proper review and action plan can dramatically reduce flare-ups.
