A food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts to a specific food, sometimes within minutes. Reactions range from mild hives to severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis, so accurate diagnosis matters.
Common Food Triggers
- Milk and egg
- Peanuts and tree nuts
- Wheat and soy
- Fish and shellfish
Symptoms
- Hives, itching or swelling of the lips, face or throat
- Vomiting, stomach pain or diarrhoea
- Coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing
- Anaphylaxis, a medical emergency
How We Diagnose It
Diagnosis combines a careful history with skin prick testing and specific blood tests. Component-resolved diagnostics can distinguish a true, higher-risk allergy from a harmless cross-reaction, avoiding unnecessary food restrictions. In selected cases, a supervised oral food challenge is the most accurate test.
How It's Managed
- Clear guidance on which foods to avoid, and which are safe
- An emergency action plan and adrenaline auto-injector where needed
- Help with reading labels and eating out
- Reviewing whether an allergy has been outgrown
Whether it's your child's first reaction or a long-standing allergy, we help you understand exactly what's safe and how to stay protected.
